SaaS Conversion Glossary

Plain-language definitions of the 10 core terms used in free trial conversion, lifecycle email, and product-led growth. Citable, precise, and specific to the SaaS context.

Onboarding
Activation Moment
Also called the aha moment, the activation moment is the specific in-app action a user takes that proves they have experienced core value from the product. It is the single behavioral event most strongly predictive of conversion to paid.

Examples: publishing a first post, connecting an integration, creating a project, inviting a teammate, running a first report. The activation moment is product-specific — there is no universal answer. ConversionCRM lets you define your activation moment as a tracked event or URL visit, then scores it at 20 points in the engagement model and uses it to decide who gets the Feature Nudge email.
Scoring
Engagement Score (0–100)
A numeric score computed from six behavioral layers that reflects how active and conversion-ready a free user is. ConversionCRM's scoring model allocates points as follows:

Recency (20 pts) — how recently the user was active.
Frequency (15 pts) — how often they return.
Depth (15 pts) — how many distinct pages or features they use.
Key feature usage (20 pts) — whether they hit your defined activation moment.
Time spent (15 pts) — total session time across the trial window.
Buying intent (15 pts) — pricing visits, upgrade clicks, quota hits.

Scores are recomputed nightly at 00:00 UTC and live every ~3 seconds in the dashboard. A score of 71–100 combined with a buying-intent signal triggers the Conversion Ready stage.
Automation
Lifecycle Stage
One of seven automatically assigned product states that describes where a user is in the trial-to-paid journey based on their behavioral data:

Signup — registered but no meaningful activity yet.
Onboarding — active but has not hit the activation moment.
Active — regularly using the product with decent engagement.
Conversion Ready — high score plus at least one buying-intent signal.
Going Quiet — was active but sessions have dropped off.
Churned — no meaningful activity for an extended period.
Paid — has upgraded to a paid plan; never emailed lifecycle emails again.

Each stage maps to one or more of the 8 automated emails. ConversionCRM assigns stages automatically based on scoring data — no manual rules or segment definitions needed.
Stage
Conversion Ready
A lifecycle stage assigned automatically when two conditions are both true: the user's engagement score is 71 or above, AND at least one buying intent signal has been detected in the current scoring window.

Users in the Conversion Ready stage receive the Upgrade Offer email — the highest-converting email in the ConversionCRM lifecycle sequence. Paid conversion among Conversion Ready users is typically 3–5x higher than across the general trial population, because the stage identifies users who are both engaged enough to value the product and actively showing signs of intent to buy.
Email
Behavior-Triggered Email
An automated email that fires based on a user's specific in-app behavior or lifecycle stage transition — as opposed to a timer-based drip email that sends on a fixed schedule regardless of what the user has done.

In a timer-based sequence, every user on day 3 gets the same email whether they've logged in once or fifteen times. In a behavior-triggered system, a user only gets the Feature Nudge when they haven't hit the activation moment yet — and gets the Upgrade Offer the night their score crosses the Conversion Ready threshold, no matter what day of their trial that happens to be.

Behavior-triggered emails consistently outperform timer-based drips on open rate, click rate, and conversion rate because they arrive at the moment of maximum relevance.
Metric
Trial-to-Paid Conversion Rate
The percentage of users who start a free trial and subsequently convert to a paid subscription within the trial window (or shortly after it ends).

Formula: (paid conversions from trial cohort / trial starts in same cohort) × 100

Benchmarks (2026):
Opt-in trial (no credit card): 8–12%
Opt-out trial (card required at signup): 25–50%
PLG top quartile on opt-in: 15%+

Most SaaS products sit below these benchmarks because the majority of trial users never get a targeted, timely reason to upgrade. See the full benchmark breakdown →
Metric
Free-to-Paid Conversion Rate
The percentage of free users — whether on a time-limited trial or an unlimited freemium plan — who upgrade to a paid plan. The term is broader than trial-to-paid conversion rate because it applies to both trial models.

Benchmarks (2026):
Freemium (no time limit): 2–5%
Opt-in free trial: 8–12%

Freemium products tend to have lower conversion rates because users have no time pressure to convert — activation and upgrade must happen organically from pure product value. Freemium vs free trial →
Scoring
Buying Intent Signal
A specific user action that indicates strong intent to upgrade, used by ConversionCRM's scoring engine to award the 15 buying-intent points and (when combined with a high engagement score) to trigger the Conversion Ready stage.

The three primary buying intent signals in ConversionCRM are:
1. Pricing page visit — viewing the /pricing page during the trial window.
2. Upgrade button click — clicking any upgrade or paid-plan CTA in the product.
3. Usage limit hit — exhausting a free-plan allowance (tracked users, emails, features).

Each signal is detected automatically from tracked events. Usage limit hits are the highest-converting signal — they represent a user who has proven enough value to exhaust their free allocation.
Email
Win-Back Email
An automated email sent to users who have gone quiet or entered the Churned lifecycle stage. Its goal is to re-engage them with the product before they fully disengage.

An effective win-back email acknowledges the silence, highlights what has changed or improved since the user was last active, and gives them a low-friction path back into the product. Win-back emails are distinct from cancellation emails (which go to paying users who cancel) — they target free users who simply stopped showing up.

In ConversionCRM, the win-back email (ChurnPrevention template) fires automatically when the scoring engine assigns a user the Going Quiet or Churned stage after previously being Active or Onboarding.
Strategy
PLG (Product-Led Growth)
A go-to-market strategy where the product itself — rather than a sales team — is the primary driver of user acquisition, activation, expansion, and retention. PLG companies distribute through free trials or freemium, let users experience value before paying, and rely on the product to convert free users to paid at scale.

The core commercial challenge in PLG is the same across every company: how do you get enough of the right free users to convert at the right moment? This is the problem ConversionCRM solves — behavior-triggered emails fired at the right lifecycle stage, powered by a real-time engagement score.

FAQs

Common questions about these terms

An engagement score is a 0–100 numeric value computed from six behavioral layers — recency, frequency, depth, key feature usage, time spent, and buying intent — that reflects how active and conversion-ready a free user is. In ConversionCRM, scores above 71 combined with a buying-intent signal move a user to the Conversion Ready stage.

The activation moment (aha moment) is the specific in-app action a user takes that proves they have experienced core value from the product. It is the single action most predictive of conversion to paid. Examples include creating a first project, inviting a teammate, publishing a post, or completing an integration.

A behavior-triggered email fires based on a specific user action or lifecycle stage change — for example, sending an upgrade offer when a user's score crosses 71, or a win-back email when a user goes 7+ days without activity. This is distinct from drip emails that send on a fixed schedule regardless of user behavior.

Product-led growth (PLG) is a go-to-market strategy where the product itself drives acquisition, expansion, and retention through a free trial or freemium model rather than a traditional sales team. PLG companies depend on strong trial-to-paid conversion to grow revenue.
